The third lesson of the School of Small Municipalities directed by Rossano Pazzagli, professor of Territory and Environmental History at the University of Molise, will be held on Friday 19 April in Castiglione Messer Marino. The meeting, entitled “The quality of life in marginal areas: housing, social and welfare policies in internal areas”, will be held in the comprehensive institute from 2.30 pm.

After the first two lessons which recorded numerous registrations from many regions of Italy, this third meeting will see the participation of Antonella Golino, PhD in Sociology and Social Research, who for several years has carried out her research activity in the Center of research for the internal areas and the Apennines of the University of Molise, and currently researcher in the Economics department of the same university.

Also present will be Giulia Ferrante, PhD student at the Gran Sasso Science Institute, and Luca Santilli, mayor of Gagliano Aterno (L’Aquila), a municipality in which social policies and welfare actions have been experimented for several years through the full involvement of local communities. The central themes of the lesson, in fact, will be welfare and social policies in the countries of the internal areas.

“For several years – says Golino – in the territories of the so-called internal Italian areas, there has been strong involvement of local communities in the processes of governing the function, in order to re-establish the fiduciary pact between the welfare system and the local community. It is therefore necessary to particular attention – continues the researcher – on the analysis of the relationship between welfare systems, housing and social policies in the so-called marginal areas, which become a laboratory for experimenting with new socioeconomic models capable of ensuring better liveability for citizens and for rebuilding systems of social cohesion from a welfare perspective”.

“In the Municipality of Gagliano Aterno – explain Santilli and Ferrante – since 2021, experiences and projects have been carried out whose approach lies in the centrality of socio-cultural dynamics, crucial for the “good health” of the communities. In this sense, key elements are the construction of grassroots participation and the meeting between local communities and new inhabitants
projects – they conclude – are being confirmed, accompanied by future actions that are underway
designing with local communities”.

It is still possible to enroll in the School, which is free for the first year, by filling out the form published on the website of the Municipality of Castiglione Messer Marino.
