Wine grapes, prices rising due to lower production in 2023

Downy mildew and hail have plagued the bunches. More marked increases in the Center and South. Double-digit drops for the grapes of the great Venetian wines

Italian telematic commodity exchange (Bmti) presented the analysis on the trend of the
prices of wine grapes relating to the 2023 harvest of the Chambers of Commerce. The study – a note informs – confirmed the widespread increases that have affected the prices of
wine grapes in Italy, due to the strong contraction in grape production in 2023. The most pronounced increases were noted in Central and Southern Italy, in the areas most affected by the reduction in production due to downy mildew infestations and hailstorms. For grapes from Northern Italy, however, greater stability was observed.

Grape prices for Amarone and Prosecco down

According to Bmti’s analysis, in Veneto there was a very slight decline in grapes for the production of Amarone and Recioto Docg (-2% compared to 2022), listed in Verona. After the growth of previous years, the grapes used for Prosecco Docg Conegliano Valdobbiadene (-11%) listed in Treviso and the grapes suitable for Prosecco Doc (-15%) and Colli Euganei bianco Doc (-15%) are also decreasing. , listed in Padua (-11%). On the other hand, the prices of grapes suitable for Lugana Doc (+13%) and of grapes suitable for Soave Doc (+19%), listed in Verona, are on the rise.

Boom for Bonarda and Barbera

Instead, the increases for grapes listed on the Lombardy and Piedmontese markets dominate. Among the grapes used to produce the wines of the Oltrepò Pavese, the Bonarda Doc and Barbera Doc grapes, detected in Pavia, increased by 28% compared to 2022. Double-digit growth (+21%) in 12 months also for the grapes of Franciacorta Docg, detected in Brescia. In Piedmont, light
increase for grapes for the production of Barolo Docg (+4%) and for grapes suitable for Langhe Nebbiolo Doc (+3%), listed in Cuneo. Again in Piedmont, modest increases, less than +5%, also for grapes suitable for Barbera d’Asti Docg and for those of Moscato Docg,
detected in Asti.

Double-digit increases for Brunello and Chianti Classico

Limited variations also for Lambrusco grapes, listed in Reggio Emilia. Among the great Tuscan reds, the prices of grapes for Brunello di Montalcino Docg and Chianti Classico Docg, recorded in Siena, increased by almost 15% compared to 2022. However, the increase in grape prices was less pronounced for the Nobile di Montepulciano Docg (+2%). Slight decline, again in the Siena area, for Chianti Docg.

Finally, the strong production contraction that hit Abruzzo led to the price of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Doc grapes, found in the Pescara market, increasing by almost 40% compared to a year ago. The increase was even more marked for grapes suitable for Pecorino d’Abruzzo Doc and Trebbiano Doc, which grew by over +50% on an annual basis.
