«I pray every day that Martina is in Heaven, I continue to see her. That day two of us died, I am a living corpse and every day I ask Jesus to take me away”: this is what Costantino Bonaiuti, the engineer accused of the murder of his ex-partner, said in a spontaneous statement. Martina Scialdonekilled with a gunshot on 13 January 2023 outside a restaurant in Rome.
Before the judges of the Assize Court of Appeal, the accused then turned to Lorenzo Scialdone, brother of the victim who was present in the courtroom, and asking for his forgiveness, he added: «I know how much you are suffering, Martina was deeply attached to you. I know what you feel, I also lost two sisters, but unlike Martina I can see my family, but she can’t anymore.” During the hearing Lorenzo was also heard, who reconstructed the last dramatic moments of the victim’s life. «When I arrived I tried to push Bonaiuti away from her. I saw the gun and immediately heard the shot. I remember Bonaiuti who had the gun and with his arms outstretched he shot Martina’s chest from one meter: I saw the bloodstain spread across my sister’s white sweater.”
