Explosion in Turin: homemade bomb in the Philadelphia area

Explosion this morning in Turin, in front of the public housing in via Tunisi 113, in the Philadelphia area. The explosion, around 9.20am, was a homemade contraption. The device caught fire on the sidewalk, in front of the entrance to the courtyard of the ATC complex. According to the witnesses’ account it was kept in a cardboard box, from which an electric cable protruded. The fire brigade put out the initial fire, alerted by residents in the area.

In the neighborhood, a few minutes after the explosion, the police intervened. Among them also the forensic officers and the bomb squad. The municipal police closed Via Tunisi to traffic, on the corner with Via Montevideo.

The hypothesis is that it is a homemade contraption made by attaching numerous lithium batteries together.

A local cleaner had found him not on the pavement but in the courtyard of the public housing complex, at the foot of the rubbish bins. He was the one who picked it up, convinced it was rubbish, and took it out of the courtyard.

When it started to catch fire he dropped it on the sidewalk and walked away. The contraption began to crackle, with many shots in sequence. It is not excluded that it is a homemade battery, abandoned after use. The men of the Scientific Police are analyzing the device.
