Challenge between BMW, Mercedes and Honda on a historic circuit: an outcome that is anything but predictable

An epic challenge took place on one of the most beautiful tracks in the world, with BMW, Mercedes and Honda as the protagonists.

In the automotive panorama there are some tracks that have made the history of motorsport and one of these is undoubtedly the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit, the Green Hell over 20 kilometers long, where the German F1 GP was held until 1976, theater – precisely in that year – of the crash that was almost fatal to Niki Lauda. On this route, today the 24 hours reserved for GT3 and other categories will be held but the circuit also remains regularly open for tests of the various brands that test their new products here.

Well, the experts of “AlVolante.it“they chose to do even better, organizing a splendid challenge between the BMW M2 Coupé, the Honda Civic Type R and the Mercedes AMG A 45S, three racing cars, the queens of their segment. The BMW in question is the most powerful of the lot hands down: it has an engine that releases 460 horsepower, a 3.0 liter with 6 cylinders in line but it is the heaviest of the three.

The most “deflated” in terms of power is the Japanese, equipped with front-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual gearbox, with 329 horsepower available. Mercedes has 4X4 all-wheel drive and a boost of 421 horsepower that comes from the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and shares with BMW the fact of having an 8-speed automatic transmission available. At this point, let’s take a look at this triple comparison, trying to understand who took home the victory on a track that is nothing short of legendary.

Nurburgring, here’s who won the challenge

On the occasion of this test, both Mercedes, BMW and Honda mounted the same set of tyres, namely Michelin Pilot Sport 4, to try to standardize the race conditions as much as possible. The Civic proved to be very agile on the circuit and set a time of 8’22”3. In fact, its greater agility in slow sections and when meeting other cars on the track made the difference in its favor.

Mercedes instead stopped the clock at 8’19”6 but it was the BMW M2 Coupé that dominated the scene, finishing in 8’15”2 the lap and separating the contenders by a lot. However, it must be said that the Nordschleife track, as already stated, is over 20 kilometers long, so, on a traditional 4-5 km track, the difference would have been a few tenths. Certainly, the time set by the little German is still a noteworthy result as well as a fact that contributed to leading 46% of the newspaper’s readers to vote the car as their favorite car among the three involved in the test, in the subsequent survey after the test.
