The next chapter in the evolution of Toyota sports cars will go by the Mazda MX5 (or “Miata” if you’re a purist). In fact, the Japanese brand is apparently thinking of a car to compete with the historic two-seater convertible which has become an absolute icon in the West too.

In 2012, the GT86 was launched, with a 200 HP 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine, followed in 2022 by its evolution, the GR86, which increased power to 228 HP. In 2019, the GR Supra, equipped with a 335 HP inline six-cylinder turbo engine derived from BMW, which was later boosted up to 382 HP. In 2022, Toyota added a 6-speed manual transmission option for the Supra, further raising the bar on performance.

Now, attention is turned to the next chapter which will aim to propose a line of continuity to this specific range of sports cars from the brand. This will be called Toyota S-FR, a more compact coupe than the Supra and GR 86 and powered by a 150-hp three-cylinder turbo engine. The abbreviation “S-FR” stands for “Small”, “Front-engine”, “Rear-wheel-drive”. This model, similar in size to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, is expected to have a significant impact on the compact sports car market.

Despite the growing emphasis on electrification in the automotive industry, Toyota continues to invest in internal combustion and fuel-efficient sports cars rear-wheel Drive, believing that there is still a strong demand for such vehicles: Toyota’s recent fiscal results in fact certify the extraordinary results that the brand is achieving even without electric. Collaborations with Subaru, BMW and now Daihatsu and Suzuki demonstrate the company’s commitment to continuing this product philosophy.

The S-FR, scheduled for 2026, will feature a refreshed design, with a redesigned grille and headlights. When the S-FR becomes available, it is expected to arrive in dealerships with a price tag of around 3,500,000 yen or just over 21,000 euros, proving to be an attractive choice for both the Asian and European markets.

Although the Japanese giant is still strongly committed to the development of its historics workhorses internal combustion, and without the rush of having to immediately switch to electric, Toyota is still investing heavily in artificial intelligence and new technologies in view of the future generation of battery-powered vehicles.
