These updates are indeed designed to fix system vulnerabilities which emerge gradually and which could be exploited by attackers to compromise personal and professional data.

However, it is crucial to pay attention to the type of update you choose to install. Not all updates that are presented to the user are legitimate. For example, a new type of scam was recently discovered that exploits user trust in Chrome updates to infiltrate malicious software into the devices of web users.

Fake Chrome Updates: An Increasingly Difficult Danger to Recognize

The world of cybercrime never stops and the latest news concerns a fake Chrome update. This update, as authentic as it may seem, is actually a “dropper”, a type of malware designed to secretly install other malicious programs. The discovery, made by security researchers at Threat Fabric, revealed the danger posed by a particularly insidious virus known as Brokewell.

A recently identified fake Chrome update installs malware called Brokewell on Android devices – computer-idea.it

The fake update comes with a web page that convincingly imitates the official Chrome interface, prompting the user to download a file that apparently appears to be a legitimate update package. Once the user accepts and proceeds with the installation, the true purpose of the malware is revealed. The “dropper” automatically loads the Brokewell banking Trojan onto your deviceinitiating a series of dangerous activities without user consent.

Brokewell is classified as a latest generation banking trojan, designed to bypass Android security, including the new operating system Android 13 and its successor, Android 14. This malware exploits the operating system’s accessibility features, normally intended to assist users with visual impairments, to gain access to sensitive information.

It can read everything that is displayed on the device screen and record what the user types, including bank account logins, social media passwords, and other online service credentials. To defend against Brokewell and other similar malware, the recommendation is always the same: exercise caution.

It’s important always make sure any update downloaded and installed comes from reliable sources, preferably directly from the Google Play Store. Furthermore, it is essential to pay attention to any messages requesting urgent or necessary updates and verify the authenticity of such requests through official channels.
