A former workshop becomes a home and workplace with windows and skylights that spread light and well-being

Living in the city as in the countryside: the project reveals its purpose right from the start larch facade and from the creation of one space in front serving as an entrance courtyard, with trees, flowerbeds and wooden flooring, crossed by a walkway that leads inside. Direct visual contact between inside and outside is a source of well-being as is thediffused natural lighting ensured by the glazing and roof windows (from Velux) of the house.

The project

The layout of the house is very complex; it develops on four sides with an approximately U shape, a layout that dates back to its previous use as a workshop. There are two focal points around which the different areas are distributed: a green patio in the centerobtained by opening the attic, e the entrance court. The interior houses living spaces, work areas, coworking and laboratories.

  • All environments enjoy the better natural lighting: in addition to the glass windows overlooking the central patio and the entrance garden, there are in fact additions the windows on the roof. The wide distribution of spaces allows you to choose the best position and also to change it throughout the day: in front of a horizontal window which favors the view towards the outside or taking advantage of the light coming from the skylights which guarantees better diffusion.

Home working: open spaces to create flexible workstations

The choice to keep the open spaces responds to the need to have more flexible workstations: individual or small groups. Family life and professional life are deliberately mixed. Working with the view on splendid bamboo plants is very different from being closed in an office. The ideal is to have two light sources, one that offers visual stimuli, the other that causes light to fall from above, eliminating unpleasant glare and guaranteeing optimal distribution.

Super essential open space: more light and insulation with the right windows

The originality of the renovation consists in having transformed the former workshop into a neutral, spacious and bright environment, in which two rooms are inserted as separate volumes, independent of the structure but in dialogue with the multifunctional space. The project exploited the pre-existing skylights, but replacing them with more high-performance windows inclined towards the east.

Roof windows are the GGL Integra model by Veluxin this case with a finish in white wood; I am pivoting, electric and solar and they make your home more comfortable and your life much easier. The remote control allows you to operate them with a single touch and from anywhere in the house. The rain sensor activates automatic closing of the windows at the first drops of water, even when you are away from home. They are available in the white wood and polyurethane version, in white wood or in natural wood in the pivot models, in the white wood and polyurethane version in the top-hung model. By adding one of the VELUX smart systems (for which you only need a home Wi-Fi connection, a smartphone and the free VELUX ACTIVE app), they can be controlled in an easy and intuitive way and you can monitor home air qualitycontributing to the well-being and healthiness of environments.

A roof to live in

A wooden staircase rises from the entrance courtyard onto the roof of the building, paved with recycled boards previously used in scaffolding, where the skylights are inserted which create wells of light inside. “From below – says the person who lives in the house – we observe the moon and the planes passing overhead”. Large wooden planters house maples; when they grow up they will also create shaded areas to enjoy greater coolness in summer.

Our furnishing project for smartworking

The space under windows is ideal for work because of the natural lighting and refreshing views that can add energy and stimulate creativity. Let’s see the furnishing project by architect Ornella Musilli (www.libera-design.it), a starting point for imagining how to equip this area of the house, close to the windows overlooking the internal patio.

Neutral uniformity of the house’s finishes, almost monochromatic

Bathroom, bedroom, service area: the rest of the house is also characterized by shades of gray and light wood, worked by the owner who defines himself architect and carpenter. The effect is decidedly restful, thanks also to the diffused light “Since the body of the building is quite deep – say the designers – it was immediately clear that we would have to use the coverage to illuminate the rooms”.

Decorative effect only in the bathroom with wallpaper

Unique decorative intervention in aa home that lets volumes and light speak it’s the bathroom wallpaper that in a discreet way it softens the linearity of the furnishings. In all rooms self-leveling concrete floors left raw And cocciopestor for the walls and for some elements of the bathroom.
