Huawei Pura Ultra 70 is the first with a retractable rear camera

Despite the ban that makes it impossible to equip its smartphones with Google services, as well as processors created in the USA, Huawei is still in the smartphone business: the latest series to arrive in chronological order is called Huawei Pura 70, also marking the debut of the Pura brand.

Despite the hardware limitations due to the impossibility of having a more recent Qualcomm Soc, and the software limitations that do not allow the execution of Google services, Pura 70 Ultra tries to amaze with a pretty good trick: a main camera that protrudes from the body.

The concept is that of cameras in which the front lens extends outside the camera body, although in reality in the Huawei terminal this occurs by a few millimeters. The gigantic lens of the rear camera, in fact, protrudes slightly from the terminal, by means of some gears placed inside it, which allow the lens to be extended by a few millimetres.Huawei Pura Ultra 70

The retractable camera lens uses a 50 MP, 1-inch sensor, with an adjustable aperture from F1.6 to F4.0. There is no optical zoom, so it seems that the movement of the lens is only to configure the basic lens. Alongside this camera there are two other sensors: 40 MP ultrawide and a 50 MP telephoto lens with 3.5x zoom.

There is no mention of the SoC in Huawei’s specifications. There isn’t even a name or model number, which suggests a Kirin 9010 judging by the Geekbench tests.Huawei Pura Ultra 70

The new chip should improve the performance of the previous Kirin 9000 and 9000s, which were equivalent, but even the 9010 should still remain on a 7 nm production process.

Other specifications include 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage on the Ultra model. On the front, however, there is a 6.8 inch OLED display and 120 Hz with resolution of 2,844 × 1,260, while the 5,200 mAh battery takes care of powering everything. The terminal has Wi-Fi 6e and Wi-Fi 7. It is only on sale in China at the moment, with the Ultra model costing around 1,295 euros at the exchange rate.

In this article, Huawei’s strategies and some tricks to circumvent the US bans.
