The former manager of Microsoftas well as former president of Blizzard Mike Ybarrapublicly defended the head of Microsoft’s gaming division Phil Spencerstating that he will certainly have been affected on a human level by the decision made to close several Xbox Game Studios and that, consequently, he does not deserve the criticism he is receiving.

“I see a lot of criticism directed at Phil for today’s Xbox announcements.” Ybarra began in a post on Ed.), but I know him and I know what he’s probably going through.

I’m not trying to defend decisions made. I think we all find ourselves in difficult and unexpected situations (certainly me too). It’s part of the Work, as well as taking responsibility for the results achieved. But he’s a good person and cares deeply about the creative process and developers. This is my direct experience. I have worked closely with him for over 8 years and have known him for over 24 years.”

A difficult day for everyone

Ybarra understands the state of mind of many, he just feels empathetic to Spencer in this difficult moment. “I 100% understand the anger and confusion, and I am deeply sorry for that affected teams today and in recent months. I didn’t agree with every decision he made within Xbox, I think that was pretty clear, but I believe in his manufacturing leadership and I know how difficult those decisions can be.

Xbox could have a bright future. I hope they can make it happen and that all the teams have an incredible experience being together. It is certainly a difficult time that requires great clarity on what the plans are for the future and how to find the enthusiasm of the players.”

After all, no one doubts that it was a tough decision for Phil Spencer too. It will simply have been a much more difficult day for those who lost their jobs. As you know, today Microsoft announced the closure of four development studios: Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog Studios, Tango Gameworks and Roundhouse Games, with the latter being merged into ZeniMax Online Studios. The reactions from gamers were not positive, as one might expect.
