The Fallout franchise, which recently also landed on the small screen, has given us the opportunity to explore multiple places in the post-apocalyptic United States, ranging from the Western side (Fallout 1, 2, New Vegas and the Prime Video TV show) to the east (Fallout 3, 4 and 76). Fallout 4specifically, is set in “Commonwealth”.
What is the Commonwealth?
Fallout 4 represents, to date, the last episode of the regular series to have landed on the market. Released in 2015 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, from 25 April 2024 it is also available on PS5 and Xbox Series The story is set in 2287which is 210 years after the nuclear holocaust of 2077, ten years after Fallout 3, and nine years before the Fallout TV series on Prime Video.
The events take place in Commonwealtha region that largely includes the former state of Massachusetts and therefore also the post-apocalyptic city of Boston.
How big is the Fallout 4 map?
When it was launched on the market in 2015, the fourth chapter of the series set a new record for explorable surface in the modern video games of the series. The Fallout 4 map is in fact 25.23 square kilometers widewhich is larger than the 22.02 square kilometers of Fallout New Vegas and the 21.91 square kilometers of Fallout 3.
In the modern era of the series, Fallout 4’s Commonwealth was later surpassed by Fallout 76’s Appalachia, which reaches a large extension of 62.25 square kilometers. These values, in reality, pale in comparison to the 157 square kilometers of Fallout 1, the 323 square kilometers of Fallout 2 and the 788 square kilometers of Fallout Tactics, but it must be said that the density of the maps of these classic episodes has nothing to do with that of the modern ones, much richer in details and locations that can actually be explored.
