The New Horizons probe flew past Pluto in 2015 sending us incredible data and photos, leaving us a huge legacy! The following shot of the dwarf planet, obtained with New Horizons’ wide-angle Ralph/Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera (MVIC) on July 14, offers a glimpse into Plutonian landscapes with fantastic backlighting provided by the Sun.

In its own small way, Passione Astronomia helps you understand how the universe works. And the universe works better if the people who are part of it are well informed: if they have read nonsense, lies, poisons, then it ends up as it ends up. It’s not going very well right now. This is why it is important that someone explains things well. Passion Astronomy does its best. Subscribe!

Some info on Charon, the largest ‘moon’ of the dwarf planet

Charon has a radius of approximately 606 kilometers (half of Pluto) and the largest known satellite compared to its “parent” body (completes an orbit around the dwarf planet every 6.4 Earth days). Pluto-Charon is the only known double planetary system in our solar system. The moon is in synchronous rotation with the dwarf planet (always shows the same face as the Earth with the Moon). But unlike our satellite, Charon is located in the geostationary orbit of Pluto. So, in addition to always presenting the same face, it appears motionless in the sky of Pluto (effect called tidal locking).
