“It’s nice to prove people wrong”

Last year Fabio Di Giannantonio risked being left without a place in MotoGP for 2024. The podium in Australia and the victory in Qatar pushed the VR46 team to focus on the young rider from Rome, after Luca Marini signed with Repsol Honda . After an uphill start to the season, with three retirements in the first three Sprint races, he could become the new spearhead of the Tavullia team, with Marco Bezzecchi increasingly oriented towards Aprilia.

Diggia defends himself from criticism

12th in the standings at the end of the 2023 championship, ‘Diggia’ is currently in 9th place aboard the Ducati Desmosedici GP23. Despite never having had the best package, he manages to extricate himself among the big names in the MotoGP class with honor and courage, despite having to suffer various criticisms from the outside. “It is always difficult for people at home to understand the situation here. They just watch a show on TV and don’t know what happens behind the scenes“, explains the Pertamina Enduro VR46 team rider to Speedweek.com. “Most people don’t know how you prepare for a race and how many hours you spend working with your team. To be honest, I don’t take these comments too seriously. Of course, the people who support us are important to me, because they push us as riders and as a team. I like to prove people wrong“.

The relationship with the media

The chances of the stars aligning for 2025 appear to be good. At VR46 they will try to retain Di Giannantonio, especially in light of the possible departure of Bezzecchi. It is also not excluded that he could enjoy an official Ducati, if the partnership between Ducati and Pramac were to dissolve, with the GP25 being redistributed on one bike each for Gresini and VR46. Being the current number one driver of the team, everything should come naturally…

Among other things, Fabio is proving to have great qualities both on and off the track, always very balanced and loyal in his comments with the press, as well as having excellent dialectics. “I try to always be myself. As a MotoGP rider in front of the camera you have a bit of power. I think we also have the power to inspire young children. The message I want to convey is to always be yourself. Of course I have good things and bad things, no one is perfect. I just give my opinion on things that happen“.

Compared to the past, the riders are much more restrained in their declarations and Di Giannantonio knows this well…”We start from the assumption that the more the championship grows, the more politically correct it becomes. This is good because in the end we represent many brands and then it’s good not to have too many pages. But like I said, sometimes you have to be yourself. It’s nice to see that people are sometimes a little different or “real”. In the past we didn’t pay much attention to words, they were more free. It was fantastic. I’m sure this is why many people liked this sport. So sometimes it’s good to be more natural“.
