The blue swordsmen did not betray and reached the final at the European Championships in Basel. The quartet composed of Alberta Santuccio, Rossella Fiamingo, Giulia Rizzi and Mara Navarria will face Hungary in the last act, going in search of a gold medal which has been missing from Italy since 2007, when in Gent it was Cristiana Cascioli, Bianca Del Carretto, Nathalie Moellhausen and Francesca Boscarelli who climbed to the top step of the podium, beating the Hungarians on that occasion.
A final reached thanks to the success in the semi-final against France. The blues imposed themselves for 32-31 at the end of a hard-fought challenge which was decided in the last assault between Santuccio and Mallo Breton. Italy has always been ahead in scoring, even by seven points (22-15). Rizzi had a complicated assault against Vitalis, who brought him back to the French. In the last two attacks, first Navarria and then above all Santuccio, however, managed to manage the pressure and the advantage. The +2 jab eight seconds from the end made by the Sicilian was fundamental.
Italy had already started its journey in the quarter-finals, where they achieved a very comfortable victory against Israel 45-15. A challenge truly never in question and which the Italians dominated.
Now in the final Santuccio and his teammates will face a surprising Hungary. The Hungarians defeated Poland in the other semi-final with a score of 45-37. Appointment at 6.40pm for the challenge worth the gold medal.
