A draw that satisfies Switzerland and leaves Scotland with a faint hope of progressing to the round of 16. The 1-1 draw in Cologne, achieved in the first half with goals from McTominay and Shakiri, gives the Swiss the possibility of even playing for first place in the group Aif on Sunday they manage to beat Germany, who inflicted a dry 2-0 on Hungary in the afternoon, earning promotion with a round to spare.
Scotland’s hopes (one point in two games) of being one of the best third-placed teams are all pinned on the match against Hungary, still scoreless.

For Scotland it has already started from inside or outside and is very aggressive at the start. After two corners in the first minutes, the goal arrives in the 13th minute: very fast counterattack, finalized by McTominay’s shot. Sommer is on the trajectory, but Schar’s deflection deceives him. It’s a different Scotland than the one overwhelmed by Germany, taller and more compact, but one inattention is enough to ruin the good start.
In the 26th minute Ralston misses the clearance and serves Shaqiri. His first-time right-footed shot goes into the top corner.
Shaqiri’s network
Having conceded the equaliser, Clarke’s team had a moment of slippage and Ndoye comes very close to scoring. Gunn is good at deflecting it into the corner. The Scottish response is entrusted (41′) to Adams’ volley following the development of a corner, but Sommer is attentive and blocks. Switzerland did not want to be surprised and in the second half they went forward. We fight for every ball, Scotland is not about to lose ground, especially in aerial duels. A draw could be enough for Yakin’s men, but first Vargas (Gunn’s save), then Ndoye (very little out, Tierney hurts himself in an attempt to tackle the Bolognese and goes out on a stretcher) looking for the three points. Embolo takes Shaqiri’s place.
Switzerland raises the revs again and, against a less than impeccable defense, he gets to the shot more often. But in the 22nd minute it was Scotland who came close to taking the lead again when Hanley’s header hit the post to Sommer’s right from Robertson’s cross. Where he doesn’t reach with technique, Clarke’s 11 makes up for it with heart and determination, driven by the enthusiasm of his fans. He needs to win and in the end Switzerland is crushed in their own half. From there Embolo takes off, who with a delicate lob then goes over Gunn, but is offside. Breathtaking final, with Scotland under siege of the opponent’s area. But the Swiss dam holds up without shaking.
