There won’t be the historic poker of last year or even a double, but the women’s foil still doesn’t disappoint and gives Italy a medal at the European Championships in Basel. After the three wins yesterday, today Arianna Errigo secured a place on the podium, qualifying for the semi-final. It will be the eighth continental medal of her career for the foil player from Lombardy, who has not climbed to the top step since 2017.
Unfortunately only one Italian qualified for the semi-finals, also because in the quarterfinals there was a derby between Arianna Errigo and Martina Favaretto. An assault that saw the Italian standard-bearer always in command at Paris 2024, eventually winning 15-9.
Errigo had closed the group stage with six victories in as many bouts, guaranteeing himself the number one seed. In the first round the Lombardian beat the Romanian Calugareanu 15-7, while in the round of 32 she swept away the German Behr with a peremptory 15-1.
There is certainly a bit of bitterness about the overall result of the Italian team, given that Alice Volpi and Martina Batini had previously been eliminated, respectively defeated in the round of 16 by the Ukrainian Alina Poloziuk with the last thrust 15-14 and by the British Carolina Stutchbury 15-3. The latter will be Errigo’s opponent in the semi-final.
