No scudetto, but lots of lights: Inter, the balance of the youth sector

The Inter youth teams ended the season without even a category title: this hasn’t happened since 2020/21

The 2023/24 season of Inter’s youth sector officially ended yesterday, the first season without the direction of Roberto Samaden. A bitter epilogue, with the home defeat of the U16s in the semi-final return match against Atalanta and the consequent elimination, after in the morning the U15s also had to give up on the Roma pitch and put their championship dreams in the drawer. Thus ends a year without even a tricolor: since 2020/21 the Nerazzurri club had not won a single category title in the competitive bracket (i.e. from U15 upwards).

No championship and a lot of bitterness

Speaking exclusively of results, the balance of the 2023/24 season of the Inter youth sector cannot be considered positive: no scudetto and not even a final. Primavera, U18, U16 and U15 stopped in the semi-finals, the U17 in the quarter-finals. All this at the end of an overall positive regular season: Primavera, U18 and U16 finished in first place, U17 and U15 in second. In short, the conditions for winning at least one category championship were all there.

The positive notes

Winning is nice, certainly, but in youth football it is not the first thing to look at. There are many positive notes that have emerged from the season of Inter’s youth sector: many boys have stood out, many of them have shown their qualities even at a younger age, several have also been protagonists in the national team. Let’s think of Cocchi, aged as an U17 but a permanent starter with the Primavera, as well as his peers Mosconi and Zarate, permanently employed in the U18s and also seen at work with Chivu. Mosconi himself, together with Mantini and Ballo, became European U17 champion with the national team. Furthermore, anything can happen in one-off matches, which is why we need to focus on the progress made in the regular season, which has always seen the Nerazzurri teams at high levels.
