The first responses arrive from theAINERP, the Neutral Individual Athlete Eligibility Review Panel, on the possible participation of athletes with Russian and Belarusian passport qualified for the Games: it was placed under the magnifying glass the conduct of some of them about a possible pro-war position in Ukrainea condition that leads toexclusion from the Games.
Italy is also affected by what can be seen from the communication received today: he was not eligible, and therefore was not invited the Russian wrestler Zaurbek Sidakov, 2023 world champion in the -74 kg freestylewho participated in one demonstration in support of the war in Ukraine. In this weight category no athlete with a Russian passport was eligible and therefore the quota will be reallocated to another country.
Italy remains confident at the window: the reallocation of the quota should send the Italian Frank Chamizo to the Games. The pass not used by the Russian, in fact, should go to Azerbaijani Turan Bayramovwho lost the play-off for Olympic qualification in the world championship in Belgrade.
The Azeri, therefore, would be the beneficiary of the quota assigned to the World Cup, which was held before the continental tournament staged in Baku this year, an event in which Chamizo was defeated by Bayramov in a hotly contested match for the Olympic passand so theAzzurro would take advantage of the Olympic card left vacant in turn from Azerbaijan.
