After the decision to compete at the Olympics, the Spaniard chooses to skip the grass of Wimbledon to play on Swedish clay, like Sinner.

Rafa Nadal will not play at Wimbledon. The Spanish tennis player decided to skip one of the most prestigious tournaments on the circuit to get to the Olympics in the best possible way. Rafa opted for the same strategy as Sinner. In fact, after Roland Garros the Wimbledon tournament is expected and then the return to France for the Olympics. This means changing surfaces, going from English grass to French clay. Thus, both the Spaniard and the Italian chose to compete in Sweden, on clay. Nadal declared this through a note released through his social media.

Nadal: «The best thing for my body is not to change surfaces»

Nadal’s words:

«We believe that the best thing for my body is not to change surfaces and to continue playing on clay until the Olympics. That’s why I won’t be at Wimbledon this year. It saddens me not to be able to experience the fantastic atmosphere of that incredible event this year which will always be in my heart and be with all the British fans who have always given me great support.”

«I will play the tournament in Bastad, Sweden», concluded the Spanish champion.

Sinner is already preparing for the Olympics: before Paris he will play in Sweden (Republic)

Jannik Sinner today announced that he will participate in the ATP 250 Nordea Open in Sweden from 15 to 21 July. Apparently an unusual choice for the world number two. In reality the Italian leaves nothing to chance. After Sweden, Sinner will be busy at the Paris Olympics from 26 July to 11 June. Tennis at the Olympics will take place on clay and the one in Sweden will be the last tournament on clay before Paris.

Sinner announced his participation in the Swedish tournament with a video message on the ATP 250 Nordea Open Instagram channel: «SI’m happy to announce that I will be playing the Bastad tournament this year, it will be my first time in this fantastic event».

Repubblica explains Sinner’s choice better:

The historic Swedish tournament is the first clay court event immediately after Wimbledon and arrives a few weeks before the Paris Olympics which will be played on the red clay of Roland Garros. Sinner, therefore, will “use” the Bastad clay tournament to regain confidence with the same surface as the courts of the Olympic Games. Nothing is left to chance: to win gold you need perfection and Jannik knows this well“.
