From the intentions of revolution in the world of tennis, with the end of the four Slams and the promotion of some important tournaments – obviously including the Rome Internationals – among the elite of the greats, together with or instead of the historic Majors, to the last, ambitious project: Angelo Binaghi is aiming for the Davis Cup Finals this time. It’s time for change, claims the president of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation: from Malaga, the Finals must move to Italy.
Sinner number 1? Davis finals in Italy
The reason? The world number 1 is Italian: Jannik Sinner. The Spaniards have “only” the number 2: Carlos Alcaraz. And therefore the Finals should be hosted by the nation that boasts the player at the top of the ranking. Binaghi actually said it, during the press conference organized by Unicredit and the International Tennis Federation for the presentation of a new sponsorship of the Davis organizing body. Words destined to raise the usual fuss, especially in Spain where as soon as they touch Alcaraz, all hell breaks loose.
Binaghi’s proposal to the ITF president
Here’s what he said Binaghi speaking directly to David Haggerty, president of the ITF: “The Davis Cup finals have been played in Spain for six years, we are hoping that there will also be a turnover, because with us having the number 1 in the world Sinner and them the number 2 Alcaraz, Always playing away from home is an anomaly that I think needs to be corrected. If the ITF saw our country as a solution, we would be ready to do our part to bring the Davis Cup finals here in Italy“.
Tennis, other than Slams and Finals: Turin is at risk
In short, yet another stone thrown into the pond by Binaghi. The number one in Italian tennis is no stranger to dramatic initiatives and has never made a secret of aiming to expand the number of important events organized in Italy. Before thinking about upcoming events, however, the priority is to prevent those who are already there from continuing to steal from abroad: after the Next Gen Finals, from Milan to Saudi Arabia, too the ATP Finals in Turin have dangerously ended up in the sights of sheikhs and businessmen international.
