Tour of the Dauphiné 2024, Route Presentation and Favorites Eighth Stage: Thônes – Plateau des Glières (160.6 km)

Sunday 9 June will be the day of the grand finale of Tour of the Dauphiné 2024. The eighth and final stage, which will go from Thônes to the Plateau des Glières and which will measure 160.6 kilometres, will be a real showdown, given the route designed for the occasion by the organisers. There are no very hard climbs, but the section is one full of dangers and with many opportunities to try to mount attacks that could turn the fate of the general classification around. In fact, this is the classic day “without a meter of flat terrain”, with three GPMs scattered along the route and an uphill finish that will help keep fans and enthusiasts in suspense until the very last metres.

Route Eighth Stage Tour of the Dauphiné 2024

He leaves Thônes and it immediately goes uphill. Leaving a small gap behind, the first GPM of the day begins, the Col de la Forclaz-de-Montmin, 7.1 km climb with 7.3 percent average gradient. The summit is located at km 14.2 of the race: subsequently, a steep descent and a new upward stretch, with the runners pedaling in the direction of Col de Esserieux (4.2 km at 5.4%). The corresponding GPM will anticipate a new, uncategorized uphill section. Another short descent and another ascent, which will lead to the flying finish line of Saint-Jean-de-Sixt, which will be the last difficulty of the first sector of the race.

In fact, about forty kilometers will follow, which will end on the slopes of the climb towards Le Salève (12.1 km at 6.8%), whose summit is located 57 kilometers from the finish line and which includes a very tough central stretch of 4 kilometers, with gradients always around 10 percent. A further, short, eventful stretch from an altitude point of view will precede a long descent, which will take the runners into the last 40 km of the race. Here there will be an uncategorized climb, the consequent descent and the final climb, the Col des Glièresa climb measuring 9.4 km with an average gradient of 7.1 percent, data which is obviously conditioned by the last two kilometres, which will be on the Plateau-des-Glieres, almost completely flat. Previously, there will be several points where the positive gradient of the climb will go beyond 10 percent.

Favorites Eighth Stage Tour of the Dauphiné 2024

Having now reached the eighth stage, the values on the field are quite clear as regards the men in the ranking. Primož Roglič (BORA – hansgrohe) seems difficult to attack when the road climbs, although Matthew Jorgenson (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) is proving to be a fast growing opponent who is playing for the second place finish with the Canadian Derek Gee (Israel – Premier Tech) who, after winning the third stage, managed to keep the level high. Given that the gap between the leaders is not so wide, there is certainly room to widen the fight for stage success also to the pursuers, especially Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS Grenadiers) e Giulio Ciccone (Lidl – Trek), who have the chance to boost morale with a stage victory.

It’s difficult to find other runners capable of pulling the rabbit out of the hat given the difficulties of Remco Evenepoel (Soudal QuickStep) and the mixed performances of his teammates Mikel Landa and various Oier Lazkano And Javier Romo (Movistar), Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain – Victorious), Callum Scotson (Team Jayco AlUla), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) e Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty). Also Laurens de Plus (INEOS Grenadiers) e Alexander Vlasov (BORA-hansgrohe) are working well but are limited by having teammates ahead of them in the standings.

Anyone else who wants to aim for stage success will necessarily have to try to anticipate, starting far from the finish line. In the last stage we saw excellent climbers ahead Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), Warren Barguil (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) and the blues Lorenzo Fortunato (Astana Qazaqstan), who is fighting for the polka dot shirt, and Davide Formolo (Movistar). Certainly not all but some will try again, perhaps together with other runners who have nothing to lose like Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious), Eduardo Sepulveda (Dstny Lot), Alessandro Fancellu (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) or Nicolas Prodhomme (Decathlon AG2R The World Team).

Major pitfalls Eighth Stage of the Tour of the Dauphiné 2024

It’s a race day that has everything to be particularly treacherous. First of all, the rain, which is considered practically certain in the afternoon hours and which could cause more than a few problems along the descents along the route. Pay attention, then, to the tiredness that may have accumulated in your legs after a week full of races, and also to any physical problems due to the fall in the fourth stage, the after-effects of which could emerge a few days later. For the men in the ranking, given the uphill start, it will be a stage to be taken with many precautions, but to be combined with their respective ranking objectives.
