The route of the 16th stage of the Giro d’Italia 2024 changes, which will be staged on Tuesday 21 May. The recent snowfalls on Stelvio Pass and the subsequent increase in temperatures they do not guarantee the right level of safety to face that ascent, due to the risk of avalanches which increases in these particular weather conditions. The organizers of the Corsa Rosa have it so partially redesigned the hamlet which will open the third week.

There Livigno-Santa Cristina Val Gardena (Monte Pana) passes like this from 202 to 206 km. In Bormio (after 33.5 km) the group he will indeed take the Stelvio Pass, but he will not reach the top precisely for the aforementioned reasons: we will stop about 3.5 km from the summit and go to the Giogo di Santa Maria (Umbrailpass), who with his 2,498 meters above sea level becomes the new Cima Coppi (i.e. the highest transit of the Giro d’Italia). It will be a 16.7 km climb at 7.1% average gradient, with a maximum of 15%.

At that point you will enter Switzerland and remain in Swiss territory for 18 kilometres. The descent will essentially continue for another 70 km, up to Lana. Flat stretch for 34 km, up to Prato all’Isarco, where the climb leading to Passo Pine will begin (23.3 km at 4.7% average gradient with peaks of 15%, the last six kilometers are challenging). Having passed the first category GPM there will be approximately 2000 meters of descent towards Ortisei, and then tackle the last climb towards the finish line: 7.6 km at 6.1% average gradient with maximums of 15%.
