Clear declarations, the Formula 1 paddock was taken aback: the winner of the Miami Grand Prix could have been someone else
Last weekend in Florida the Miami Grand Prix, sixth round of the 2024 season Formula 1. A very intense event, characterized by the particular format which includes a single free practice session and the Sprint Race on Saturday as a starter for the actual race.
Needless to say, the first part of the American weekend was dominated by Red Bull Max Verstappenauthor of pole in the shootoutfrom the victory in the Sprint Race and of pole in qualifying for the race on Sunday. A domination which, however, was interrupted in the final race of the event, in which it was Lando Norris with his McLaren number 4. For the 1999 class from Bristol it was the first victory in his career, obtained thanks to an extraordinary performance and a little ‘help’.
Formula 1: Norris wins in Miami, but the FIA’s mistake is sensational
The FIA commissioners made a sensational mistake, allowing the British team from Woking to gain about 20 seconds on his immediate pursuers. It all started with an accident which required the intervention of the Safety Car, which however took to the track after Norris had already crossed the finish line, placing himself ahead of Verstappen and forcing the Dutchman (and the other drivers) to drastically reduce of the speed foreseen by the regulation. As a direct consequence, Norris took the opportunity to complete a full lap before pitting with a advantage of 33 seconds (compared to the 11.5 he had before the crime happened).
An episode that sparked great uproar among enthusiasts and professionals, stunned by such a gross error. An error which, in fact, distorted the race. Ferrari team principal Frederic is convinced of this Vasseur, who in the following press conference commented on the story as follows: “I think Red Bull is still ahead. Without the Safety Car Max probably would have won and he still took pole positionwhich is why they still have an advantage”.
In short, Norris’s victory in Miami was a beautiful victory and welcomed by everyone with great pleasure, as the Briton was one of the best and nicest drivers in the Circus. It is necessary to underline, however, how the McLaren driver actually found it
