Camila Giorgi, retired from tennis: her name is on the ITIA retired list

Camila Giorgi and tennis, a (troubled) love now over. “I don’t follow tennis,” she said a few years ago. Since yesterday, she doesn’t even practice it anymore. The Italian has decided to retire and stop playing. No social messages, no posts for an Instagram profile made up of photos of her, but which have little to do with sport. The ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency) website reports her as one of the withdrawn players, dated May 7th.

THE NOW PAST

Camila’s last match dates back to March 2024. In Miami, Giorgi lost to world number one Iga Swiatek with a result of 6-1, 6-1. After the US stage, the tennis player from Macerata had decided not to set foot on red clay, postponing her debut in this part of the season: there were also doubts about Roland Garros, the Slam where she did best, reaching the quarter-finals in 2018. The one against the Pole will therefore remain the last great theatrical blunder of a player who put on a show on the court, not only from a tennis point of view.

The former Italian number one has won four titles in his career: a WTA 1000 (the first to win it after Pennetta’s in 2014) in Canada; two further titles on hard courts and one on grass. Between injuries and negative moments, Giorgi is considered one of the best Italian tennis players in history. Her best season remains 2021: the quarter-finals at the Olympics, the 1000 title in Montreal and the return to the top 35 in the world. A year in which the girl from the Marche managed to show off all her talent, taking advantage of that aggressive game with her feet on the line that allowed her to command most of the exchanges. Powerful and never predictable, always under the eyes of her exuberant coach father, Camila was the heir to an Italian women’s tennis that has always had her say. Now it will be your turn to find a new heir, but there are already candidates.
