Benetton Rugby, Lucchesi: “The biggest regret is having conceded too much to Gloucester”

The green-and-white hooker comes back from the defeat in the Challenge semi-final and is ready to give his all on the tour to South Africa

Benetton Rugby’s defeat at the Kinghsholm Stadium in Gloucester is already in the archives. Unfortunately for the green and whites, the Challenge Cup ended once again in the semi-finals.

Despite the courageous performance, Bortolami’s men had to give in to a very cynical team, determined from the first minute to win the ticket to London.

The environment was a little disappointed by the 40 to 23, probably because this season more than last, there were all the conditions to aim for the final act which will be played on May 24th at the Tottenham Stadium in London.

Gianmarco Lucchesi, author of two goals, returned to what happened last Saturday and was interviewed in the columns of Gazette.

Benetton Rugby, Lucchesi: “We were convinced and still are that our value on the pitch was superior”

«It’s very hard to get over a defeat like that because we were very keen to reach this final to crown an extraordinary season – begins Lucchesi – Unfortunately, however, this one faded for the second consecutive year right at the best. Furthermore, we were convinced and still are that our value on the pitch was superior, however the too many errors committed shifted the inertia of the match in Gloucester’s favor as the minutes passed, thus preventing us from bringing home a positive result.”

The English team always kept the score in their favor, scoring the first try after six minutes and also scoring in other situations where Benetton’s defense seemed reactive. A negative start which then affected the rest of the match.

«The biggest regret is that we conceded too much to our opponents by making even rather banal individual errors that we definitely could have avoided and which led to us being put under pressure. Furthermore, in some moments of the match we were not concrete enough, making mistakes
a few too many choices which allowed Gloucester to create the best opportunities to extend the score and in such close matches we absolutely cannot afford them.”

The tour in South Africa and the URC season to be honored to the full

What didn’t work in Gloucester, will necessarily have to work in Durban and Pretoria, where Benetton Rugby will face the Sharks and Bulls franchises in the sixteenth round of the URC. The fight for a place in the play-offs is very open, but maintaining or improving the eighth position will also depend on how the Treviso team perform in South Africa. Here is Lucchesi’s recipe:

«We will have to try to recover from this disappointment as quickly as possible, trying to reset immediately after this defeat and immediately recover our energy. Certainly in attack we will have to be more cynical and precise in view of the next matches, trying to reduce the number of errors in attack to a minimum, especially those in handling and then play the phases with maximum intensity, thus trying to tire the opposing defenses without conceding give them a moment to breathe. As far as defense is concerned, however, we will have to try to improve to overcome one-on-one impacts without putting the opponents on the advancing plane and forcing them to make mistakes.”
