Autumn Nations Series: no Test Match between Wales and Georgia

The publication of the Autumn Nations Series calendar has interested the Italian public especially regarding the challenges that the Azzurri will undertake, as well as the venues that will host them. This is like in every nation. In Wales and Georgia, however, fans are asking themselves another question: shouldn’t there have been a match between the two national teams?

At the end of the last Six Nations, Georgia had “thrown down” the gauntlet to last-place Wales, offering them an official Test Match in the autumn international window. The response from the Dragons was not long in coming: within a few hours the Welsh Rugby Union had responded “We’ll be in touch”. A “let’s stay in touch” which had made fans and others assume that the two national teams would meet next November.

The Autumn Nations Series calendar reveals that the clash will not take place, at least next November. In fact, Wales will face Fiji on November 10th, Australia on the 17th and South Africa on the 23rd, while the only European tier 1 national team that will challenge Georgia will be Italy on Sunday 17 November. It’s true that there could be a window on the first weekend of the month, but for now it’s only on a purely theoretical level.

The fact left the fans of the two teams very disappointed. Not surprisingly, after the Welsh Rugby Union announced the autumn programme, the comments section was filled with questions about what had happened to the planned Test match between Wales and Georgia, with some joking about it as can be seen.
