Gianmarco Tamberi and Arianna Errigo are the two Italian flag-bearers for the Olympic expedition to the Paris Games (26 July-11 August). In the morning, CONI president Giovanni Malagò communicated his choices to the Council and National Council, which were naturally endorsed. In Tokyo it was Elia Viviani and Jessica Rossi: always a man and a woman, as the IOC has advised for some years to respect gender equality. Tamberi and Errigo (who will parade on Friday 26 July in the opening ceremony of the Games scheduled in Paris along the Seine) will receive the tricolor from the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella in the ceremony to be held on 13 June at 11 am at the Quirinale, together with the flag-bearers of the Committee Italian Paralympic.

criteria

The choice of Tamberi and Errigo obviously respects the fundamental requirement to be nominated: having won Olympic gold. “Gimbo” standard-bearer (gold in Tokyo in the high jump ex aequo with Qatari Barshim), 36 years after Pietro Mennea (Seoul 1988), is also a recognition of Italian athletics which has won 5 golds out of 10 in Japan. If Tamberi is the leading man in athletics because he also comes from the world championship triumph in Budapest which allowed him to close the circle, the 35-year-old from Monza Arianna Errigo (gold in the team foil in London 2012, bronze again in the team foil in Tokyo 2020 , silver in the individual in London 2012), mother of one-year-old twins Mirea and Stefano, also has a very notable list of achievements (also 10 golds at the World Championships, eight in the team and two individual) and is a tribute to fencing, from always the most successful sport for Italy at the Olympics with 130 medals.
