Equipped areas for outdoor fitness, football and five-a-side football pitches, volleyball and basketball courts, a climbing wall, a skate park also suitable for BMX, ping pong tables, a tennis court and a bowls court . There are 57 freely accessible sports areas in Modena, located in parks and scattered in the neighborhood green areas, which from today can also be found in the interactive online map on the website www.comune.modena.it/argomenti/sport: starting from a aerial view of the city, the map is navigable and allows you to search by type of practice or by address, also providing a photo for each structure.

The free-access equipped areas respond to the growing need for spaces for unstructured sports practice, with the dual aim of promoting a healthy and active lifestyle and creating spaces for sociality and aggregation.

Currently in Modena there are ten fitness areas, 11 football and five-a-side football pitches, nine volleyball courts and the same number for basketball, the Le Gobbe skate park in via Pignedoli, a small climbing wall in the Torrazzi park, six skating rinks, nine tables for ping pong, a tennis court in via Stelvio and one for bowls located in the XXII Aprile park where there are also various other sports equipment.

Furthermore, to support free sports practice, it is possible to use the changing rooms and showers services of the Dogali and Pergolesi municipal swimming pools (with an entry cost of 1 and a half euros for the changing room and 40 cents for showers and hairdryers).

The number of free access sports areas has increased in recent years in response to various requests coming especially from the youth world as emerged, for example, from the participatory path dedicated to young people of foreign origin by Must a Lab which recommended to the municipal administration to map the areas and free sports activities and promote them with advertising campaigns, with the collaboration of sports promotion bodies, schools, federations and sports associations. The tendency to practice free sports was also confirmed by the recent “Sport4young” research in which over 1,300 young people were interviewed: 38 percent declared that they practiced sports independently in the gym or outdoors and 37 percent uses apps and devices for training, but only half of the young people interviewed know about the city’s fitness areas and just 11 percent use them regularly. The interventions carried out also respond to an agenda approved by the City Council which invited the development of equipped and free green and sports areas to encourage sporting activity and the aggregation of citizens.

In recent years, eight new fitness areas have been created in Modena for a total investment of around 300 thousand euros, and in the spring several maintenance interventions were carried out on sports equipment already present in different areas of Modena: in particular the volleyball facility in the Cognento park, the five-a-side football goals in Lesignana and the football goals in the Ferrari park were replaced, the net system of the Torrenova tennis court was renovated and the playgrounds in via Schiocchi and via Stelvio, without forgetting the installation of fixed metal nets in all ping pong tables.
