Retirement for the Aston Martin driver

Fernando Alonso he occupied third position for a long time in the Sprint of the Chinese GP, but then had to surrender to the superiority of the Ferraris and Sergio Perez’s Red Bull. On the 16th of the 19 laps Carlos Sainz went to attack Alonso, crossing the trajectory at the exit of Turn-5 and the two Spanish drivers went through 3 corners wheel to wheel, 3 decidedly demanding corners in light of the radius and the speed with which are addressed.

The two cars ended up at contact and Alonso got the worst of it by getting a puncture which then led Aston Martin to decide to withdraw the car. Carlos Sainz also suffered some damage after the contact, but managed to finish in fifth place.

The two-time world champion commented on what happened on the track as follows: “To have this speed we certainly ask too much of the tires and we wear them out very quickly. It’s not our race pace and so we use the tires to their maximum to match the pace of our rivals and then we run out of them. We had a bunch of cars behind that we couldn’t keep up with anymore, and it was a shame we retired, but that’s how it went. Sainz and I did a couple of turns in parallel, I think 6 and 7 very quickly. On the 8th I went to the outside and Carlos opened the line a lot to close me in a bit, and then I did the same on the 9th going to the inside to tighten the line. At 8 I gave up so as not to touch each other, he didn’t do it at 9 and we touched. In the end it’s a sprint, it was a lot of fun and we lost a few points. A 7th or 8th place is 2 or 1 point. We’ll see tomorrow, I think our natural position will be further back and we won’t have these battles.”
