Yesterday the news was spread that Edoardo existed, but he was not seriously ill and had never asked for an appointment for euthanasia. But the reality is very different even if the term “terminal illness” (which was correct during the phone call from the fan) was inappropriate.

«Edoardo exists and is really ill. He is our associate and his pain is real. He said what he thought in a moment of enormous despair which unfortunately emotionally affects patients suffering from a rare and difficult disease like his. I ask for respect and I ask you not to exploit his outburst, treating him as he deserves”, the words of Stefania Bettinelli, president of the Modena association Le ali di Camilla, which supports patients suffering from various rare diseases of the lining epithelia.
But already yesterday the Teladoiotokyo speakers on Teleradiostereo who had accepted Edoardo’s phone call went to visit the fan who showed him not only all the tests and treatment protocols he undergoes, but also the physical and psychological conditions despite his will to remain anonymous. There was nothing else he could do in the face of doubt. Edoardo has a chronic, incurable and degenerative pathology: «I have been living with it for years and I have started an experimental treatment that forces me to go outside Italy».
Today’s step back was interpreted by many press outlets as a total about-face, so much so that it earned headlines such as: “I called to laugh.” But the reality, as mentioned, is very different. Edoardo deserves to receive all the love and warmth of the past few days, especially for the way in which he has managed everything in these difficult years: «What I have is known to my parents, two of my closest friends and my wife, who even last year, when we got married, he took care of me lovingly in the bathroom without knowing the guests, who were naturally unaware of everything.”

He doesn’t find it funny about his illness or about those who have similar or more serious pathologies, nor did he want to make one of the most classic telephone pranks (as alluded to by someone) but he called because «it made me laugh that, even in a very painful situation, the My thoughts were always on Roma. I thought about the end of life, it’s a thought that gives me relief.” He didn’t expect the media pillory and is now evaluating possible legal moves.
In the meantime, Teleradiostereo issued a statement with the approval of the doctors who follow Edoardo, then it was Dr Bettinelli herself who spoke: «As an association we must and want to protect your privacy, because in the world of rare and ultra-rare diseases even just the name , the city and the name of the disease make the person immediately identifiable. Not only does Edo exist, but what he said is what he thought. And I ask for respect for the depth and delicacy of what he revealed, speaking from the gut, like any fan who turns to the radio of his favorite team. Without any second thoughts or ulterior motives. I ask you, please, not to exploit his outburst and to treat him with the respect he deserves. Finally, I thank the many people who sincerely took his story to heart.”
Tomorrow the doctor will talk more about the issue live on radio. Roma has followed the matter and remains at the boy’s disposal, with De Rossi in the front row.
