From the illness (and first aid) of the footballer Mattia Giani at the moment the first ambulance arrives 17 minutes have passed. This is the reconstruction of the sports judge of the FIGC – Tuscan Amateur League, who based himself on the referee’s report of the Lanciotto-Castelfiorentino match suspended on 14 April due to illness to the player who later died in hospital.

The judge writes that the aid on the occasion was given «by the guest masseur and by a doctor present in the stands who intervened with cardiac massage and the defibrillator present in the changing rooms”, and that “after 17 minutes a first ambulance arrived and continued the rescue maneuvers assisted by other volunteers who arrived a few minutes later with another ambulance”, therefore “the health workers did their utmost in their attempts of resuscitation and then provide for the urgent accompaniment of the player to the nearest emergency room.”

«Justified suspension» and fine

At 14′ of the first half the match was interrupted while waiting for help and was then suspended. A suspension justified, says the judge, also due to the discouragement and inevitable upset of players and managers, and he established that “the remaining part” to be played should be recovered. Furthermore, Lanciotto was fined 400 euros “for lack of ambulance and/or doctor”“sanction commensurate with the service omitted, taking into account the fact that occurred”.

The sports judge also writes that «the serious event» of Mattia Giani’s illness on the pitch «had caused one general discouragement of all members of the two teams (manifested with a joint written declaration) and the match director himself and that therefore there were no longer any conditions to continue the match which was suspended on the result of the moment being 0-0″.

Having said this, the judge observes, it makes it indubitable “that the very unfolding of events, as duly reported and subsequently concluded tragically, constitutes that situation of an exceptional nature which justifies the failure to continue with the tender” and which “must be appreciated with reference to the fact that events of this magnitude, in the context of a small reality, such as that of amateur teams in which the contiguity between the responsible managers and players is clearly peculiar, inevitably cause an upset so that, faced with the particular and tragic nature of the event which was at the origin of the fact is appropriate evaluate the same on a strictly human levelan aspect characterizing all relationships that can be classified within the principles of sporting loyalty”.

«It is worth underlining – he writes – how the respect for the serious event also on the part of the Lanciotto Campi Bisenzio company and the members of the refereeing team is a symptom of great observance of the values of solidarity and sporting fairness».
