Just while he was busy on Track 2 together with Simone Bolelli for the first round of the doubles tournament (a match later lost in two sets against the Argentinians Gonzalez/Molteni), good news arrived for Andrea Vavassori. The Turin player, defeated in the second round of the qualifiers, he was in fact fished out for the main draw of the ATP 500 in Barcelona 2024 in singles.
The 28 year old from Piedmont therefore enters the main draw as a lucky loser thanks to forfeit of the Russian Karen Khachanovseventh seed in the seeding. Vavassori therefore skips the first round with a bye and directly enters the round of 32 against the Spanish host Roberto Bautista Agutwho beat the Russian Roman Safiullin yesterday in two sets.
The local wild card currently occupies 84th place in the world ranking, but in the not too distant past he was even top 10 (ninth place as best ranking at the end of 2019) and was able to play in the semi-final of Wimbledon 2019. A match therefore complicated but not impossible for our standard bearer, who will however have to show off a great performance to dream of a coup on the Catalan red clay.
