Bucharest, Fonseca surprises Sonego

Already a sparring partner during the last Nitto ATP Finals, Fonseca once again confirmed the good impressions made five months ago in Turin, impressions which last February in Rio de Janeiro found further confirmation thanks to the quarter-final obtained which made him the most young Brazilian to have ever achieved one in the history of the ATP. Yet, having worn off the exuberance of the first games, Sonego still managed to take possession of the game, letting his rival let off steam while patiently awaiting the free throws, which promptly reached the 4-1 achieved in just over twenty minutes of play.

As the minutes passed, however, it was Fonseca who found greater harmony with the conditions of the day, receiving important support from his serve and unexpected help from the Italian’s lightness. The Piedmontese thus ran into two terrible innings that relaunched Fonseca until he hoisted him to the set point of the tenth game. The world no.51 manages to stay afloat but in the tie-break he falls again to 6-1 and then capitulates at the fifth opportunity.
