Christmas of bad weather: red alert in Emilia-Romagna, rivers under observation

A Christmas marked by bad weather across much of the country. Continuous checks and monitoring are underway after the heavy rains which, from the North to the Centre-South, are causing critical issues. In Emilia-Romagna the Civil Protection has issued red and orange alerts for hydraulic and hydrogeological risk in the lowland areas between Bologna, Ferrara and Ravenna. The right tributaries of the Rhine are under observation, in particular the Idice, for which flooding cannot be ruled out. Yellow alert in other areas of Emilia-Romagna and in Lazio, Puglia, Campania e Tuscany. Snow has been reported in western Liguria and the Tuscan Apennines, while strong bora blows in Trieste. In Lombardy a landslide affected Valdidentro, in upper Valtellina. The authorities urge maximum caution and to limit travel in the most exposed areas.

Friuli Venezia Giulia, Bora expected up to 90-100 km/h

The depression present over the western Mediterranean and the anticyclone over eastern Europe continue to favor the influx of east-northeast currents into the low layers. Moderate Bora is blowing in the region on the plains and eastern areas, while it is still strong on the coast. In the last 6 hours there were still gusts of around 100 km per hour on the coast between Monfalcone, Trieste and the adjacent stretch of sea. From the evening the moving of the low pressure towards the west will favor a gradual attenuation of the intensity of the Bora. Strong wind also in the high altitude Pre-Alps.

The regional operations center of the Civil Protection in Emilia-Romagna will remain operational 24 hours a day, after the red alert issued for an area that includes the Bolognese plain and part of the provinces of Ferrara and Ravenna. Widespread and persistent rainfall is expected, particularly in the central sector of the region. At the moment, the waterway that causes the greatest concern is the Idice, on the outskirts of Bologna: the tributary of the Reno has exceeded the threshold of attention. Meanwhile, snow returns to the mountains. The snow level, now around a thousand metres, could go down to the hilly areas. The Corno alle Scale and Cimone ski resorts are opening.
