Taipei condemns the exercise which the Chinese military calls “a serious warning against ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces and external interference forces.”
The Chinese military announced that it had started new maneuvers around Taiwanin which army, navy and air force units participate to «approach the island from multiple directions» and «send a serious warning to the separatist forces that they seek the island’s independence and to the forces of external interference.”
«These exercises focus mainly on patrols of preparation for sea-air combatassumption of full control, blockade of ports and key areas and three-dimensional external deterrence”, reads a statement from the Eastern Theater of Operations Command published on the official account of the WeChat social network.
The exercises, called «Justice Mission-2025»take place after one new escalation of tensions across the Strait, in a context characterized by the strengthening of US military support for Taipei and the recent visits to the island by Japanese political leaders, at a time of deterioration of relations between China and Japanand on the Taiwan issue.
The maneuvers – according to the press release from the Chinese armed forces – began on Monday they take place in different areas around the islandincluding some areas of the Taiwan Strait and the sea and air spaces to the north, southwest, southeast and east of the island territory.
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA, Chinese Army) has indicated that the purpose of the deployment is to «test joint combat capability of the operational theater ».
Chinese military authorities also defined the exercise a “legitimate and necessary” action to «protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity».
The new operation comes in a moment of strong tension between China and the United States over the Taiwan issueafter Washington recently approved measures to strengthen security cooperation with the island and began new procedures for selling weapons to Taipeito which Beijing responded with sanctions against US defense companies.
In early December, the director of Taiwan’s National Security Bureau (NSB), Tsai Ming-yen, warned that it was “not unlikely” that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) would carry out new large-scale maneuvers around the island before the end of the year.
Taiwan condemned the use of «military intimidation» by China. «In response to failure to comply with international standards
by the Chinese authorities and the use of military intimidation to threaten neighboring countries, Taiwan expresses its strong condemnation“Presidential Office spokeswoman Karen Kuo said in a statement.
In response to Beijing’s military maneuvers around the island, described as “important” by China, the Taiwanese military announced today a deployment of armed forces. “Appropriate forces have been deployed,” the Taiwanese military said.
