Is Joe Biden still capable of governing the United States or should he withdraw his re-election bid after the media disaster of the TV confrontation with Donald Trump? The question stands out in the last episode, Saturday 29 June, of Stasera Italia on Rete 4. Commenting on what is happening overseas is the American journalist Alan Friedman according to whom “the gamble of Biden’s advisors was to organize this debate precisely to present a president tonic and energetic, clear and lucid, instead it was a boomerang. It was heartbreaking to follow the debate”, admits the journalist with Democratic sympathies, “total sadness” and a true “disaster”.

And what happens now? “The Democrats went into a tizzy,” Friedman explains. But will Biden resign? “My opinion is that it would be useful for him to retire, California governor Gavin Newsom would beat Trump more easily.” But that probably won’t happen. “What do I expect as an observer of American politics? No, Biden has no intention of retiring and the Democrats can’t do anything about it.”

In short, if Biden wants to run again, no one can stop him because it is “standard” practice among the Dems for an outgoing president to run for a second term. An internal challenge after the first four years in US history has only occurred with Lyndon Johnson. Then there is a “cynical” aspect, Friedman points out. If Biden were to withdraw, the one to step forward would be vice president Kamala Harris, who is even less popular than him, ready to put a spoke in the wheels of a possible entry into the field by Michelle Obama. In short, the Democrats are in a quagmire.
