Writing only the name ‘Giorgia’ on the ballot paper for the next European elections – as Prime Minister Meloni invited us to do yesterday – does not invalidate the vote. Sources from the Interior Ministry made this known. In the manual of instructions for polling station presidents produced by the Ministry of the Interior on the occasion of the consultations, the cases of valid voting are reported in which the preference for the candidate is assigned “using identifying expressions such as diminutives or nicknames, communicated previously to voters, as a way of expressing preference that can be used by any voter. The vote is valid – it continues – as long as the actual will of the voter can be deduced”.

Because the vote is valid
The prime minister’s request, however unusual, does not violate the rules and makes the preference absolutely valid. The “Giorgia” option does not lead to the annulment of the vote because in the party list the candidate’s name will be “Giorgia Meloni known as Giorgia”. This allows the voter to indicate only the first name of the Prime Minister.
How do you vote in the European elections?
On 8 and 9 June, Italians will be called to the polls to elect their representatives to the European Parliament. Every voter has the right to cast their vote by drawing an If he draws a mark on more than one list mark, the vote is invalid. After voting, the voter must take care to fold the ballot inside the voting booth and return it to the polling station president.
The voter can also express up to a maximum of three preferences, exclusively for candidates included in the voted list. In the appropriate lines drawn next to the mark of the voted list, the voter writes the name and surname or just the surname of the preferred candidates. In the case of Meloni, you can only write «Giorgia» as she is included in her party list as «Giorgia Meloni known as Giorgia».
In the case of multiple preferences expressed, these must concern candidates of different sexes (for example, in the case of two preferences: woman-man or vice versa; in the case of three preferences: woman-woman-man or vice versa; woman-man-woman or vice versa). If the voter expresses multiple preferences for candidates who are all of the same sex, the preferences following the first are cancelled.
