Ciatti murder, Cassation confirms 23 year sentence for Bissoultanov

“We expect that the 23-year sentence will become final and that Bissoultanov will be found and put in prison. I hope that our government, our authorities and the Italian law enforcement forces will have the will to look for him, which unfortunately has not happened in Spain. I hope it’s the right time, it’s really the minimum for what he did to my son” Luigi Ciatti, Niccolò’s father, said upon entering the Court of Cassation.

The Court of Cassation confirmed the 23-year prison sentence for Rassoul Bissoultanov, the Chechen, still at large, accused of having beaten and killed Niccolò Ciatti on the night between 11 and 12 August 2017 outside a nightclub in Lloret de Mar in Spain . The supreme judges of the first criminal section, accepting what was requested by the deputy prosecutor general of Cassation Antonietta Picardi, declared the appeal presented by the defense inadmissible. The sentence issued last July by the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Rome which confirmed the first degree conviction thus becomes definitive.

History

In the first instance for Bissoultanov, who is a fugitive, the judges had excluded the aggravating circumstances of cruelty and frivolous motives. Bissoultanov was arrested on 12 August 2017 in Spain and then released after 3 years and 10 months. After being released from prison, the Chechen left Girona and was later arrested in Germany on an international arrest warrant and later extradited to Italy. In December 2021, however, the Court of Assizes of Rome released him, with a provision later annulled by the Supreme Court. Having returned to Spain, after the 15-year sentence, also confirmed at the appeal, Bissoultanov lost track of him.

“Justice done”

“I think it is important that Bissoultanov’s guilt was recognized. This is the first step but now he must be sought so that he goes to prison because unfortunately Niccolò cannot do what he does and it is not right.” Thus Luigi Ciatti after the Supreme Court ruling which made the conviction for Rassoul Bissoultanov definitive. “We are satisfied – echoes the lawyer Agnese Usai, legal representative (together with her colleague Massimiliano Stiz) of the Ciatti family -, Our request has been accepted. The Italian ruling thus becomes final. It means that the sentence that will be carried out is the Italian one and that if Bissoultanov is found he will serve his sentence in Italy. Now we will read the reasons. This sentence does not return Cinzia and Luigi’s son, however, justice has been done.”
