Flesh-eating flies, a state of emergency declared: these citizens are worried

Flesh-eating flies, the state has declared a state of emergency, citizens are alarmed. Something truly distressing and worrying is happening, a real invasion of a species of carnivorous flies, the alarm among the population is high. These flies, moreover, attack livestock, pets and humans.

They are decimating livestock and their range of action is increasingly expanding in a worrying manner. These are New World Screwworm flies, insects capable of attacking other living beings by creating wounds and lacerations in the skin in which to lay their eggs.

Carnivorous flies invade the country

A truly terrifying situationlike a real horror film or story. The invasion of these carnivorous flieskillers, scientifically known as Cochilomyia hominivoraxof the family of Calliphoridaeis alarming and putting the entire population in serious difficulty. The Government had to decree a state of emergency to deal with what could be a catastrophe.

They decimate livestock and attack domestic animals and humans themselves. By literally eating some parts of the body they create lacerations, wounds in which to lay their eggs. The larvae that will emerge from these eggs, hundreds and hundreds, they insinuate themselves into the body and flesh of the host, feeding on their own tissues thus causing intense pain, infections and even tissue necrosis.

Flesh flies are native to North and South America. Every now and then these insects, with a high potential for danger, emerge and torment towns and cities. In Costa Rica for dayswe are experiencing a real invasion of these insects.

The population is exhausted and helplessly watches the decimation of their livestock or pets. There are quite a few cases in which these carnivorous flies have attacked humans, causing serious consequences.

We are working to avoid catastrophe

Unlike other flies and insects, in fact, this species, instead of laying its eggs in the carcasses of dead animals, does so in living beings, including humans. The eggs deposited in small wounds, lacerations or even orificesthey can go unnoticed until they hatch. The larvae that emerge will then feed on the host’s flesh, causing serious consequences up to and including death. The Government, with the Ministry of Healthhas decreed a state of emergency and is collaborating with the United States of America to eradicate this disconcerting phenomenon.

The United States Department of AgricultureAfter all, after centuries of incessant actions against these harmful insects, with incisive actions, it managed to eradicate these carnivorous flies for the first time in the 1960s. Thanks to the experience and help of the USA, therefore, Costa Rica hopes to get out of this situation as soon as possible.

In the event that a citizen were to experience the symptoms announced and released by the ministry, the only solution will be to surgically remove the larvae from their tissues and then remove any infections or diseases caused by them. This makes us understand how dramatic and alarming the situation really is.
