Terror at high altitude this morning when an accident occurred at the Macugnaga cableway plant, in Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, in Piedmont. Some people were injured and about a hundred were stranded.
The accident at 2,800 meters altitude
The accident, according to the first information that emerged, occurred at the Passo Moro mountain station, at around 2,800 meters above sea level, probably because the cabin arrived too quickly at the arrival station. The injured, who were immediately helped by a doctor and a nurse who happened to be on site, were evacuated by medical helicopter. According to what we learn, their lives are not in danger. The cableway system is currently stopped to allow around a hundred people, including children, who were already in the area and who are unharmed, to use the fire brigade and financial police helicopters.
Evaluations in progress
“We had a technical problem. We are making assessments, from the initial information the lift did not decelerate correctly upon entering the station and hit the station barrier”. This is what was reported to the Ansa agency by Filippo Besozzi, administrator of Macugnaga Trasporti e Servizi, the company that manages the ski lift that leads to Monte Moro. “Fortunately there are no serious injuries, no one’s life is in danger. From what I know there are six people involved from a medical point of view. We had some people in the cabin, at this moment I can’t say exactly how many, and the one who suffered the most serious injuries is a 59-year-old who has a wound on his arm. Others have had small grazes”. Regarding the causes of the accident, Besozzi reported that the system “braked incorrectly and the emergency systems came into operation. The system did not find any major damage but we will have to carry out the appropriate checks”.
