«So many legends about me when I decided to leave the band»

Mauro Repetto, the other half of 883, defines himself as “someone who dreamed, a visionary”. And in fact it takes his way of attacking life with a pinch (or two) of madness, the one that led him to give up everything at the height of success, but also to launch himself into the enterprise that starts at the end month: a one man show where he talks, sings, dances, assisted by Artificial Intelligence. Searching for Spider-Man debuts on 28 April in Bergamo and, after a spring run, returns to the stage in autumn to bring “the true story of the 883” to the theatre.
To paraphrase you, “How come”?
«Stefano Salvati and Maurizio Colombi, two friends, proposed this adventure to me. The epic of 883 is moved to the Middle Ages, we become minstrels who try to get the songs to Count Claudio Cecchetto.”
Will he sing 883 songs?
«I will sing all the most famous songs, including a little gem: the version of “Finamente tu” in English, as it was originally created».
How does Artificial Intelligence come into play?
«Three screens will allow me to talk to Max and me as young people. Spider-Man will be a kind of Beatrice for Dante who however will also list all my flaws, with a lot of self-irony.”
Even on his famous ballets?
«At the time of 883 we were two boys, neither fish nor fowl. I was very happy to dance, but we were really unprepared for the scene, I copied from Janet Jackson and of course, they made fun of me. I didn’t sing because Max seemed like Frank Sinatra to me and it was clear he should do it. Now there has been an evolution: I learned to play the guitar and I sing.”
What did Pezzali say about the show?
«We are lucky enough to have always been friends and never colleagues. When I told her about it she said “great”, for him it’s as cool as if I told him I’m going on holiday. I told him that I will invite him and that we will laugh hard together. There will always be this bar dimension between us and in fact as soon as everything became work, we almost talked to each other less.”
When she dumped 883, Max didn’t tell her anything.
«He and I grew up together and this is worth more than anything else. That time he understood in 10 seconds, he knew very well that I wasn’t leaving the 883, but that I needed another dream. Max, with his surrealist humor, is the funniest person I’ve ever met, as well as the greatest friend of my life.”
You called Radio Deejay every day to let people know you.
«I had “extorted” the radio phone number from Linus. So, every afternoon, the first thing to do was to call. They really responded, sometimes Jovanotti passed by, and calling Milan excited us, it wasn’t to get stuck.”
Claudio Cecchetto then put his trust in you.
«He was truly the only one who believed in us. When he called us about Castrocaro, we did absurd things, like swallowing a lit cigarette we were smoking before he received us. Once at lunch at his house, we were in such reverence that we didn’t have the courage to ask him to go to the bathroom. Then we ran into the street to pee against a wall.”
You live in Paris today: do you still work at Disneyland?
Of course, I organize events. I started out as a cowboy and didn’t need to work given the royalties, just as I don’t need to now, but my mother convinced me. Many legends were born about me, but when I went to Paris I enjoyed starting from scratch and I never had a hard time.”
How do you explain the nostalgia of the 90s?
«At the time we were all more naive and wanted to dream and fall in love with our idols. Today perhaps there are fewer idols, everything is more uniform.”
Will you and Max ever write new music together?
«If, by chance, after some stupidity, a song like back then came out, it would be the only eventuality. But we will never look to each other to do something as colleagues.”
What proposals have you had in recent years?
«They were looking for me to make films or books about me because I was a kind of Loch Ness. But I have always been out of touch, I have never responded. Except for Max or Cecchetto.”
