Subsonica have become our Depeche Mode

There is a cage on the stage of theAssago Forumvery long, which hides the five stations on which in a few minutes the Subsonicwill give life to their return to the arenas, after a long time, but above all after a new great album, Augmented reality, which brought the Turin band back to a compact sound, as well as to a renewed human and artistic communion.

And in fact at nine o’clock the songs from the new album lead the way in a set that will be very long, as well as memorable. It is a courageous act – Samuel is keen to remind us – to start with four pieces that are making their live debut at that very moment, and in fact after some aftershocks in Human Dogseverything is ready to take off.The cage risesand then the stage also rises, consisting in reality of five autonomous platforms that transport the five members of the band to different heights – up to five meters -, leaving underneath a tangle of cables, extremely scenographic, with a tremendously apocalyptic feel .

But the future sang in Augmented reality it is only imaginable because there was a past full of events and great music. And then the time machine can be activated, the display reads 1997, Things I don’t havethen 2007, Poison – an anthology of colored crystals explodes on the LED wall, pure dystopian psychedelia -, finally 2000, Aurora dreams And Free everyone. The Forum is literally bedlam, everyone is already standing in the standsand the concert started half an hour or so ago.

Boosta

Just enough time for two words and another four-piece block begins that leaves you breathless. Glaciation, Discolabirinto, Rapid clouds, The center of the flame. In all this we forgot that these five crazy people are over fifty and don’t seem willing to calm down the fury of groove and granite sound that is hitting the thousands of ecstatic people who have been dancing since minute one of the live show. The volume is incredibleor rather it is right for the occasion, the scenography moves without peace, leaving a glimpse art work created ad hoc, ranging from an AI version of Million Dollar Baby to an immersion in the frozen seas, to simple but effective black and white light trajectories.

Now that the panting is taking over, you can decompress, you can let yourself go with the glacial ballads of Subsonica. But tonight even the sweetness of Inside my voids is crossed by a excruciating tension, nothing is left to chance, and the final refrain explodes, for a change, to frame one of the most different moments of the entire concert. Vocoder on the voice, Samuel who bends us towards the ground, Boosta always with his back to dance with his keyboards, Don Casacci who speaks, and preaches-well-on several occasions.

And a self-respecting exceptional tour requires someguests that they respect each other. The Turin rap academy, represented tonight by Ensi And Willie Peyote, brings the Forum audience a handful of minutes of perfect bars, which suffer from the good schoolboy syndrome, but which make one think that a Nu-metal tour of these two great mcs wouldn’t be bad at all. And after a good version of Waiting for the sun we can return to delirium, to the last act of a set that is almost two hours long.

The second phase of Subsonicaas much maligned as it actually needs to be re-evaluated, is recalled in three deadly pieces: The Flood, Gasoline Ogoshi – live very bad and distorted to the limit of the possible -, and Lazarus. We would all expect to see the boys get off the stage, pretending to have an encore, but no. 135 minutes of concert without a break. There’s time for one last hat-trick, opened by The smell – further proof of the beauty of the set list just heard – and closed in the most classic of ways, All my mistakes And Roads. And this last one leaves me speechless, as always, for the transport with which the audience always sings the ending of the piece, a sort of ascending special that goes against the rules of the pop climax. A small miracle signed Subsonica.

It’s probably the most important tour of their lives, in terms of size, scenographic impact and length of the set. It is not simply a way of presenting the songs from the new album live, which sound more direct live, shot into orbit by five monsters, who the longer they are on stage playing, the happier they are. This tour in the Subsonica arenas will bea new shockthe perfect mix of entertainment and giant music, a show withelectronic authority from Depeche Mode, with Muse-like technological ventures, without any form of tackiness, just a foggy and Turin pragmatic spirit. If augmented reality sounds like this, we want to go deaf by dancing in it.
