Marty Supreme, Josh Safdie’s new film starring Timothée Chalamet, had an alternative ending, the details of which the director and actor revealed.
Marty Supreme is one of the most anticipated titles of the first half of 2026: after being premiered at the Turin Film Festival, the film starring Timothée Chalamet and directed by Josh Safdie will arrive in theaters on January 22nd. In a recent interview the director and Chalamet discussed the finale of the film, revealing that there is a alternative ending which would have shown the future of the protagonist.

Set in New York in the 1950s, Josh Safdie’s film chronicles the life of Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet), ambitious and reckless ping pong enthusiast. In the back room of a shoemaker where he works, Marty dreams of becoming a famous as a table tennis champion, the only joy of his life. His thirst for glory will lead him to realize this dream, winning over 22 titles. As revealed by Chalamet and Safdie a Varietythe film should have ended in the 1980s, when Marty he was older.
The choice to set the alternative ending of Marty Supreme in the 80s it depended on the obsession of Safdie for the song “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears. The director recalled that he listened to the song on repeat while watching a film of a table tennis match from the 1948 British Open: the player had caught his attention because it reminded him of the way of moving Marty and together with the song – which reflects on the concept of youth – it gave him the idea of a finale set in the 80s. The alternate ending was also confirmed by Timothée Chalamet: a IndieWirein fact, the actor revealed that that scene was supposed to be played during the credits, but it was never made:
“It was something that would have made the headlines, more of a way to clarify the theme of Marty’s future and what would happen to him a little more clearly. But we ran out of time and after six hours of prosthetic aging makeup we never shot it.”
