Is Arrapaho the worst film in the history of cinema? “A record that makes us proud”

There are those who consider Ed Wood the worst director in the history of cinema. Tim Burton also made a film with Johnny Depp in the title role, released in 1994. But if the thought is for the worst movie there are those who have no doubts.

We are not talking about the worst films of 2025 but about who holds the prize for worst film ever.

We’re talking about RapahoCiro Ippolito’s 1984 feature film, taken from the album of the same name by the zany musical group Squallor. Shot in just 15 days on an extremely low budget, the film is inspired by a parody of zany western settings with deliberately grotesque character names and scenes.

The plot includes absurd characters such as Scella Pezzata, daughter of a tribal chief and betrothed to Crazy Horse, despite the fact that she is in love with Arrapaho, the son of another tribal chief. Among the aspiring lovers also Luna Caprese; kidnappings and absurd escapes, in a story that takes on particularly comical contours.

Arrapaho was conceived as a deliberately trashy and zany film, complete with parodies of commercials and deliberately awkward gags. The lines and improvised scenes are also different. Squallor also contributed to the writing. But why is it considered the worst film in history?

This was defined by the judgment of the critic Morando Morandinian extreme opinion from the critic who passed away in 2015, which contributed to making it a cult for fans of trash cinema: “I gave a face to Squallor. It was born as a crazy adventure, in an unrepeatable era, it has become a cult and even anticipated the language of the web. I care a lot about the record as the worst film, I hope it remains unbeaten”.

The film will be screened today in Bologna for New Year’s Eve.
