Piranesi, Susanna Clarke’s novel becomes an animated film

Piranesi is a fantasy novel highly appreciated internationally, New York Times best seller with over four million copies sold, as Deadline points out. In 2021 she also won the Women’s Prize for Fiction. The story told is set in a dreamlike alternative reality and the house where it takes place is not just any one: rooms and corridors are infinite, close to the walls there are countless statues, each different from the other, building a sort of labyrinth within which the ocean is imprisoned. And in this immense house lives Piranesi, who every day explores it fully and in his diaries keeps track of all the wonders that he discovers. The only person he talks to is the Other, a mysterious man to whom he tells all his discoveries about him. One day, however, he receives a cryptic message: there is someone else in the house and he is looking for Piranesi.

After the international success garnered by the novel, Piranesi becomes a animation film. Knight, who will direct, declared in this regard:

Piranesi is a treasure, and he is very dear to me. As a filmmaker, I can hardly imagine a more joyful experience than wandering the worlds Susanna dreamed of. She is one of my all-time favorite authors, and with Piranesi, Susanna has created a beautiful, devastating, and ultimately life-affirming work of art. I am honored that she has chosen LAIKA as her home.

The author also added a note about the new animated adaptation: “Animation is one of my favorite things. I was inspired by many animated films; and LAIKA has produced extraordinary work: films like Coraline and the Magic Door and Kubo and the Two Strings, full of beauty, wonder and strangeness. I’m thrilled that Piranesi has found a home with them and can’t wait to see what they do next”.
