Russell Crowe’s Gladiator was supposed to be resurrected in the original Gladiator 2 story

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated films of 2024, but perhaps not everyone knows that the sequel was originally very different from what we will see next November.

First of all for the presence of Russell Crowe, who would have reprized his role as Maximus Decimus Meridiuswhich however will not happen in the new version: this is because, in the second chapter conceived immediately after the great success of the first episode, the star hired the musician Nick Cave to write a screenplay focused on the return to his character, who as you know is killed in ending of the first chapter.

How were they going to bring him back to life? Very simple, just the title imagined by Nick Cave is enough to understand it: Gladiator 2: Christ Killer would have been a fantasy centered on the resurrection of Maximus, with much of the story set in Limbo, a reality between life and death in which Maximus would find himself after the fatal stab inflicted by Commodus at the end of the first film. Furthermore, the story would also include an encounter with Jesus Christ and would see Maximus become a gladiator in the afterlife to regain his life.

Gladiator 2 will be released on November 23rd. For more content, find out what Ridley Scott’s next films will be.
