In a new and long interview with the Telegraph, George Miller talked about his cinema and his Furiouswhich he will bring to theaters in a few weeks with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
The well-known director addressed a very interesting topic on which Denis Villeneuve had already expressed his opinion a few months ago Dunesstating how he firmly believes in cinema that needs little dialogue to work.
Miller explained that dialogue tends to slow down the pace of a film which, by its nature as a medium, should be enjoyed “high speed”: his stylistic choice is reflected in the philosophy behind the era of silent films which, quoting Hitchcock, states that “films are those to which you do not have to add subtitles even if they are shown in Japan”.
This can be summarized as a result in Furiosa: A Mad Max Sagaa film lasting approximately two and a half hours, starring Anya Taylor-Joy which approximately has a number of bars approaching thirty. For comparison, in Mad Max: Fury Road Tom Hardy he had about sixty, like Charlize Theron.
However, the lack of jokes did not make the work of Anya Taylor-Joy lighter, in fact, it made it decidedly more stressful. The actress actually spoke about how working on this film put her to the test:
I have never felt more alone than during the making of this film. I don’t want to go into details, but suffice it to say that everything I thought would be difficult was actually very difficult. I finally got what I wanted, I wanted to change, I wanted to be put in an extreme situation that would give me no choice but to grow up.
