We had thought about many ideas for possible stories suitable for a third Deadpool film, ideas that could have been good as sequels to the first two films, but none of these would have proposed such an epochal change. I can safely say that the story was completely changed, and from that day on, the idea came very quickly.
We’ll probably never find out what the ideas were at the time for a third Deadpool movie. We do know, however, that contacting Hugh Jackman was Ryan Reynolds’ idea. One of many, to be honest. The intention was not to spoil the ending of Logan – The Wolverine of 2017 and, in fact, the film’s trailer suggests that what is represented on the screen in this case is a variant of Wolverine who has disappointed his universe. Integrating both Deadpool and Wolverine wasn’t easy, as the president of Marvel Studios later said Kevin Feige.
The truth is, I wasn’t even sure how to incorporate Deadpool. I was thinking a lot about how to bring the mutants and the X-Men into the [MCU], and I thought it had to be more than just replaying the hits. But the truth is that Ryan is an idea machine. When he proposed it to me, he added 25 more ideas.
