Furiosa, Edgar Wright’s enthusiastic comment: “I’m still recovering” | Cinema

This morning the first comments from the international press on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga came out, but a few hours later also the director Edgar Wright https://twitter.com/edgarwright/status/1787860396441014443 a long commentary on George Miller’s film which will be presented at the Cannes Film Festival next week.

This is an important endorsement from a colleague but above all from a cinephile, who underlines the qualities of the film with great enthusiasm. Here is our translation:

While I know what it takes to make a movie, I still can’t figure out how Dr. George Miller makes his.

I was lucky enough to see Furiosa a month ago, and I’m still reeling from the idea that movies like that exist. It’s so intricate, detailed, immersive. The planning and love that has gone into the staging, the subdivision, the design is simply unreal. Hats off to George and his team for bringing us 45 years of such imaginative, visceral cinema.

Also, the subtitle A Mad Max Saga, is not wrong as this is a revenge film, not a chase film like Fury Road. The closest comparison is to something like Ben Hur – where the thirst for revenge burns inside for years and is resolved (no spoilers) with the sweetest of revenge. Filmmakers and fans will leave the theater with their heads spinning. I felt both inspired and envious! At one point, during an action scene halfway through the film, I turned to a friend and said, “How the fuck does he do all this?”

And, of course, the cast is incredible. Chris Hemsworth has never been better, Tom Burke has a brooding, rugged presence reminiscent of the original Road Warrior, and Anya… I’m thrilled and proud to see her light up the screen like this.

In March 2020, literally 48 years before the pandemic forced us into lockdown, I found myself having dinner with George Miller in London: I had just shown him a first cut of Last Night in Soho. He asked me if Anya would be a good choice for Furiosa, and I said, “Yes, yes! She is a star, choose her now! ” I texted her that evening telling her to expect a call from George Miller, and I’m so excited to see the results four years later. What a ride, you’ll love it!

We remind you that the film with Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Alyla Browne and Tom Burke, will be in theaters on May 24th in the United States, while in Italy from May 23. We will see a preview of it at midnight at Arcadia Cinema in Melzo: book your seat!
