John Carpenter sure: “Oppenheimer is a film that is too overrated”

An icon of international horror cinema, John Carpenter, has publicly expressed his opinion on Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s film which dominated the last awards season, culminating with seven Oscars out of thirteen nominations. A success that according to the Halloween director is vastly overrated.

According to Carpenter, Oppenheimer is a decent film that didn’t completely convince him considering the hype that surrounded it, instead revealing the title of a work that he particularly liked:“I don’t want to talk about things I didn’t like. I really liked Maestro. I thought it was great. Oppenheimer was ok. It was pretty good. Everyone is praising it as the film of the century but I don’t agree with that”. Oppenheimer has landed on TV and streaming: here’s where you can see Nolan’s film.

L’Carpenter’s opinion on Oppenheimer is certainly shared by a minority, considering the critical success of the film but above all by the public, given that the film grossed 974.3 million dollars worldwide, against a budget of 100 million. In any case, the lack of a chronologically linear plot and the presence of numerous flash forwards could be some of the reasons that contribute to some viewers not being passionate about it.
Oppenheimer tells the story of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), leading the scientific team that led to the construction of the first atomic bomb in the history of humanity. The film also stars Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh and Josh Hartnett.
